Adult

Our focus with the adult curriculum at our school is striving to meet the individual needs of our students. For adults, the purposes and reasons for training can cover a very wide spectrum. Thus, whilst our adult Taekwondo curriculum is comprised of the art in all of its forms (modern, traditional, competition), we also concentrate on practical self defense techniques in addition to elements of other styles of martial arts just to keep things fresh, fun and challenging. And we ground the whole approach with the latest technical and approaches to physical fitness.

Taekwondo

Defined as the art of kicking and punching or “smashing with the first,” Taekwondo is the world's most popular martial art.

With over 200 countries practicing the art, Tae Kwon Do has now replaced Karate for the generic term for an art of kicking and punching. Also an official Olympic sport since the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia, Tae Kwon Do's popularity continues to rise as more and more people across the world fall in love with its fun and fast paced nature.

Hapkido Classes

Adult

Due to the nature of the art, Hapkido is only offered at ISMAA for students 16 yrs and up. Much like our other curriculums many elements of other styles of martial arts play into the already vast and extensive Hapkido foundation to make for a very interesting and intriguing study. This class is certainly for those students who are searching for that something extra and seeking a more profound experience and understanding of martial arts through their training.

A little more about Hapkido...

It is safe to say that many of the prominent Korean martial art styles would not have evolved into what it is today had it not been for the Japanese occupation and subsequent annexation of Korea. This point in history, which began in the early 1900's and lasted until around the middle of the century had a huge impact on the styles of martial arts that would emerge in the era following this period. As a result many arts such as Taekwondo, Hapkido and others born of the post Japanese occupation era, are, in fact, evolved forms of what began as Korean and Japanese hybrid arts. And this phenomenon is framed quite nicely and prominently in the case of Hapkido. Read More...

Much of the credit of the art's formation is attributed to Grandmaster Young Sool Choi, who developed the genesis of the art in the late 1950's after studying under Daito-Ryu Aiki-Jujutsu Grandmaster Sokaku Takeda. During the occupation, Choi was abducted from Korea as a youth and taken to Japan to serve as a servant to Takeda. Many forms of the story have come to light but in one way or another Choi was allowed to learn the art of Daito-Ryu Aiki-Jujutsu, which incidentally, should be noted, was also one of the prominent arts that Morihei Ueshiba used in his development and formation of Aikido. Some accounts even have the two respective founders of these arts (Hapkido and Aikido) as “classmates” under Takeda. Whatever the case may be, what is certain is that Choi, upon his return to Korea began teaching martial arts. It's generally agreed, for the most part, that Choi initially began teaching a very pure form of what he had learned in Japan for a time before he eventually began to implement changes and additions. These changes, modifications, additions and such came from every source, even from some of Choi's students who were already well versed in other martial arts until what we now know as Hapkido ultimately emerged.

While the debate continues about the exact way in which Hapkido came into existence, and who or where or what style these modifying elements can be traced back to, the one thing that is without question is that the form or forms of Hapkido today is as vast as can be. Almost every organization or school has their twist on the art and rightfully so, as Hapkido is meant to be a universally compatible and ever evolving art.

Hapkido

Founded by Grandmaster Young Sool Choi, Hapkido or “the way of coordinated power” is a multi-faceted self defense based martial art that encompasses striking, grappling, throwing, and pressure point techniques with an emphasis on joint locking.
